Dr. Jianzhong Wu is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and a cooperating faculty of Mathematics at the University of California, Riverside. He received PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, MS and BS/BEng degrees from Tsinghua University. Dr. Wu’s research is primarily focused on the development and application of statistical-mechanical methods for predicting the microscopic structure and physiochemical properties of confined fluids, soft materials and biological systems. He is a fellow of the American Physics Society and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.


In the near future electric industry will undergo radical changes due to the imperative transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energies in order to drastically reduce CO2 emission. Standing between the current centralized electricity generation system and a more efficient, sustainable and distributed future electricity network are major scientific and technological challenges that are awaiting breakthroughs in diverse fields of physical sciences including chemistry, biotechnology and materials. This presentation explores how molecular thermodynamics can help future engineering developments by providing a deeper understanding of various energy transfer processes in nature and, more important, quantitative predictions essential for materials design and industrial optimizations. Illustrative examples will be discussed on applications of molecular thermodynamics to renewable energy generation, energy storage, and electric power transmission.
